Volume 2, Number 2
With the launch of our DAPguard™  security application at DistribuTECH 2009 in San Diego, we have included here a summary of how the DAPguard™ retrieves substation IED files while addressing NERC CIP requirement.   I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that stopped by our booth at DistribuTECH. We look forward to meeting some of you at the upcoming IEEE 2009 Power Systems Conference & Exposition in Seattle  (March 15-18). The ASAT Booth number is 219!

DAPguard - How Does it Work?

What is the DAPguard™?
  • The DAPguard™ is a software application that provides secure remote access to substation IEDs (RTUs – D20, D25, Protection relays – SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Areva) and meets NERC CIP requirements.
  • The DAPguard™ provides a flexible and simple integration interface between your IT Enterprise Security Server and your substation IEDs. This flexibility minimizes changes required for your existing substation IEDs.
  • The DAPguard™ application is available on both our DAPserver™ product and DAPmini™ product (for retrofitting existing D20 RTU based substations)

How does it work?
  • First, enable the DAPguard™ application,  which is part of the software function running on the DAPserver™  (or DAPmini™)
  • The DAPserver™ will then be physically connected to your substation IEDs. It will act as a data concentrator providing access to two substation data types:

    • Polls real-time data from the substation IEDs.
    • Provides a secure virtual connection to the substation IEDs for non-operational data access.
  • You can also initiate a session with the DAPserver™ through a remote PC connection. Upon request, the DAPguard™ application will provide secure remote access by:

    • Authentication – against a central enterprise server database or an alternative local server database within the substation.
    • Authorization – pre-defined user access levels or privileges
    • Audit trail – provides a log of user access for auditting purposes
  The bottom line?
  • The DAPguard™ application provides a simple and practical approach to addressing your remote substation security access needs, as well as meeting NERC CIP requirements:
    • Remote substation access to non-operational data
    • Flexible configuration and interface to your existing centralized Enterprise Security Server.
    • Minimal changes to your existing substation IEDs
