Volume 3, Number 3

We are very excited to introduce our Integrated On-line Condition Monitoring for Asset Management, which is the latest software application for the Smart Substation migration initiative.

This application utilizes the DAPserverplatform to integrate multi-vendor sensors and IED, provide a station level consolidated view and analytics of your critical substation assets health condition, allows for remote access to view and retrieve the substation information in a secure manner.

The capability of this application will greatly benefit the utilities in the following:

1.      Alternative data path to the substation information without overloading the existing SCADA system.

2.      Secure remote access and visibility to substation sensors and apparatus eliminates unnecessary
         maintenance trips to the substations

3.      Enables predictive condition based maintenance instead of time or scheduled based maintenance.

4.      Act as a data source to enterprise level data historian and applications to optimize asset utilization,
manage capital expenditure and reduce operating expense.

Integrated On-line Condition Monitoring for Asset Management

The electric power utility industry is one of the industries that has the largest infrastructure. From generation to transmission and distribution network, the power grid comprised of a vast variety of assets. The operation, maintenance and management of asset is absolutely critical to utility business management and power grid operation. However, it has always been challenging to manage power system assets due to the variety of equipment, technologies and the wide spread geographic location. The implementation of integrated on-line condition monitoring of power system equipment is an essential step toward effective asset management.

Equipment monitoring and diagnostic technologies have been available for some time. Many utilities implement various sensing technologies and devices to gather data and information to improve equipment operation and maintenance. However, scattered data from various sensors and islands of systems makes it impractical to utilize the data. By integrating sensors and unifying data, integrated on-line condition monitoring systems can greatly enhance the operation, maintenance, planning, and management of power system equipment

Integrated on-line condition monitoring allows utilities to take advantage of various sensing technologies as deemed fit. The real-time data can greatly enhance the efficiency of equipment operation and utilization, while the historical data can facilitate equipment diagnostic, maintenance and service scheduling, as well as planning for CapEx and OpEx.

Recent Events

Western Power Delivery Automation Conference in Spokane, WA April 13-15, 2010

ASAT participated in the annual WPDAC where electric power utilities, technology and serviceproviders gathered to share experience related to substation and feeder automation, data communication, cyber security, power system stability and other applications. In this conference, ASAT also demonstrated how its DAPserver™ technologies can be utilized to meet these application
needs and address Smart Grid initiatives. For more information, please contact us.

2010 IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition
in New Orleans, LA April 19-22, 2010

Following the product launch of DAPgateway™ for IEC-81850 at DistribuTECH 2010, ASAT showcased the DAPgateway™  at the 2010 IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition in New Orleans.  Integrating  IEC-61850 IEDs from major manufacturers such as ABB, Areva, GE and SEL, the DAPgateway™ demonstrated its capability in facilitating a true multi-vendor IEC-61850 based substation automation system. The DAPgateway™ enables power system operators to integrate both legacy IEDS and IEC-61850 IEDs to a single system. For more information or a
demonstration, please contact us.

ASAT Participates in Junior Achievement

On May 5th, 2010 ASAT Solutions Inc. once again presented the Junior Achievement Program (Economics for Success) at Mount Royal University. Economics for Success is an interactive program designed to encourage students to consider and reflect on the advantages of remaining in school until they have acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes to undertake the long-term goal of a successful career.
